Oakland artists have the power to create new networks when olds ways stop serving the people. The town is rich in resources and we build upon our natural ecosystems rather than outsourcing and extracting.

OAKLAND FUTURES INSPIRE NEW REALITIES
Our greatest power as BIPOC artists is our collective knowing that the fight for racial justice cannot be achieved without cultural power. BIPOC artists carry the gift of speaking truth to power and Oakland artists are first to advocate for adequate resources and form alternatives.

LABOR by RYAN NICOLE and NIEMA JORDAN
The short film, Labor, is a work from collaboration between Artist Disruptors, RyanNicole and Neima Jordan. This film emerged out of our workshop series, Oakland Futures. This film is about the process of giving birth to words and the mothering of creation, while that creation is being undervalued. This poem is a response to the lack of accountability and humanity in the death of Breonna Taylor. It also affirms the resilience of Black folks, as the poem says, “the heaven in us that they can’t seem to kill” and the belief rooted in legacy of not just surviving, but thriving.

Black Fathers’ Film
Love, joy, vulnerability live in a space Black fathers make so their children can grow and be brilliant. The Center for Cultural Power is pleased to present “Black Daddy,” a music video created by Oakland’s own Dame Drummer, Tommy Shepherd and their children Little Tommy, Little Dame, and Demi Sauce directed by Salvatore Fullmore. The “Black Daddy” music video uplifts true narratives around Black Fatherhood which celebrates the strength and commitment of Black Dads.
